Causes of Bullying at School and Its Effects on Children

School Bullying Essay Example

The majority of people heard about different cases of bullying in families of abusive spouses, in the Internet, at the university or at school. Someone even was a victim of bullying at school. So, this problem is very widespread, especially among children. One may think that an innocent age has no reasons for such cruelty, but in fact, bullying at school is a real problem worldwide. Psychologists all over the world are trying to stop it, but it seems impossible. So, if bullying at school is one of acute troubles of the contemporary society, it is necessary to look at causes and effects of this problem.

The most evident reason for bullying is aggression. Ill-bred children do not know how to cope with their aggression. The main trouble is that they cannot show this aggression at home because in the majority of cases, they have too cruel parents. Therefore, one victim at school can suffer from all the power of aggression that cannot be shown to parents. As for the effects of bullying on its victims, unfortunately, it may have terrible results. Some pupils even decide to commit suicide after it; because of a high suicide risk connected with being bullied, scientists even coined a term bullycide to refer specifically to suicide after bullying (Bullycide, 2017).

Another reason for bullying is a feeling of shame. Those who bully other children are usually ashamed by adults for some reasons, and they have nothing to do except for bully someone else to forget this feeling for a while. Some people think that excessive self-esteem is also the reason for bullying because children bullying someone at school look very self-assured. However, this assumption is mostly unsubstantiated by scholarly evidence, and a feeling of shame is still regarded as the major cause of bullying at school (Lamia, 2010). As for the victim, bullying may have very sad consequences. For instance, last investigations prove that bullying at school may cause mental disorders in adult age (Nierenberg, 2015). As a consequence, self-esteem of a victim of such bullying may be really hurt, and victims’ families often have to turn to specialist counseling services to restore their children’s psychological balance and well-being.

It is also necessary to mention the reason for bullying such as absence of an opportunity to connect with each other without the presence of a victim. It is well-known that different children may stand together to bully one child. So, it can be said that a victim unites the whole group around him- or herself. Moreover, if a freshman comes to a class where one person is bullied by others, he or she will have to join in. Otherwise, he or she may become another victim that no one wants to be (Kuykendall, 2012).

Certainly, bullying is a very unpleasant phenomenon of everyday life, especially when it comes to children’s bullying. Stopping bullying is a number one priority in the majority of educational establishments worldwide, which may be achieved by involving parents into the dialogue. Happy children don’t bully others, so the root causes of bullying may be searched in a family situation or child abuse the perpetrators experience at home, as well as neglect or improper upbringing that may also become the reason. Brave children may protect themselves from being bullied by others; hence, the very first thing to pay attention to is adults and their behavior with children inside a particular family.
